Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
A standardized document describing the hazards, handling, and emergency procedures for chemical and hazardous materials.
MSDS / Safety Data Sheets are provided by the chemical manufacturer, not generated by Klervex. An MSDS is a product-level document that must be authored by the party who manufactures or formulates the substance, following the GHS 16-section format.
Klervex supports MSDS as a compliance flag on products in your catalog. When a product is flagged with msds, it serves as a reminder that an MSDS must accompany the shipment. You are responsible for obtaining the MSDS from your supplier and attaching it to your shipment documentation.
What It Is
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), also known as a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), provides comprehensive information about a chemical substance or mixture. It is the primary source of safety information for workers, emergency responders, and regulators.
Under GHS, an SDS must contain 16 standardized sections covering identification, hazards, composition, first-aid measures, fire-fighting, accidental release, handling and storage, exposure controls, physical properties, stability, toxicology, ecology, disposal, transport, regulatory information, and other information.
When It's Required
- Hazardous materials shipments -- Required whenever dangerous or controlled chemicals are shipped internationally
- Customs clearance -- Many countries require an MSDS to clear chemical imports
- Workplace safety -- Must be available wherever hazardous materials are stored or used
- All transport modes -- Required for air, sea, road, and rail shipments of hazardous goods
How to Use MSDS in Klervex
- Flag products in your catalog -- Add the
msdscompliance flag to any product that requires an MSDS. - Obtain the MSDS from the manufacturer -- Contact your supplier or the chemical manufacturer to obtain the current SDS/MSDS for each product.
- Attach to your shipment -- Include the manufacturer-provided MSDS with your other shipment documents when delivering to the consignee, carrier, or customs authority.
